SEASONAL FRAGRANCE PHILOSOPHY, in a few words:

Your favorite fragrances become your signature, and there’s no need to change your fragrance wardrobe from season to season, unless of course you want to!

I will forever remember my mother’s perfume as she prepared for a night out with my father. It was part of her essence, a woman celebrating a romantic evening. As she hugged me before going out, the smell of her skin became one with my own.

Like the fragrances I wear today, my mother’s fragrance remained on the fabric of her clothes.  Trying on my mother’s clothes hanging over her chair was like wrapping myself up in her arms.

Today my teenage daughter wraps herself lovingly in my bathrobe, and tells me it smells like me.

Your fragrant self is a gift of love to you and to those whom you cherish, now and forever. It is the stuff of treasured memories, an expression of YOU.

That said, maybe you change how you feel from season to season? Do you feel a sense of renewal and joy when spring rolls into town?  Are you ready to change your fragrance up a bit to express how you feel now?

There are fragrances that seem to naturally herald the first gentle caress of spring, flowers and fruit growing from the fertile earth. The light floral and fruity fragrances of the following 4 fragrances celebrate a gentle transition to spring.

Express your new spring self, and always feel free to call for a personalized consultation if you’d like to play and explore a fragrance that beautifully expresses who you are right now! → Read more

You love all this, but it can also leave your head spinning and your skin fatigued and stressed out.

Skin, the largest organ of your body will show the first visible signs of lifestyle imbalance including excessive dryness, inflammation, acne, eczema, itchiness and irritation. Beautiful skin, at its foundation, begins with healthy lifestyle choices. Your skin is effected by every thought, feeling, emotion and action. If you are stressed out trying to do it all (in a seemingly effortless manner), chances are, so is your skin.

By the way, your mind can be comfy in de-Nile, but your skin will tell the truth.  Listen to your skin.

Are you a Lebenskunstler?  It’s one of the most beautiful words I know, and no it has nothing to do with Oktoberfest.  The first chill in the air, falling leaves, autumn storms, and a recurring desire to make my hibernation nest cozy and warm makes me want to get in touch with my inner lebenkunstler.

It’s too good a feeling to keep to myself, so I want to share this feeling with you.  Maybe it’s time for you to discover YOUR inner lebenkunstler too?

Leben (life) and kunstler (artist) combine to make a yummy word that describes someone who makes an art of her everyday life.  Now, who wouldn’t want to be a lebenkunstler?  Don’t worry if you’re not feeling it right now, or never thought of yourself as an artist.  No one is born a lebenkunstler, and it’s not at all hard to become one.  We’re not talking about a visual (Picasso) or dramatic artist (Meryl Streep). A lebenkunstler is more of a ritual artist, a decorative artist in the way she decorates her moments, hours and days, as well as the space in which she lives.

Elements of everyday life touched by creative rituals add love add meaning to our lives.  As it becomes clear that colder weather has come to stay, our indoor environments, where we spend more of our time until spring (in Minnesota where I live and in other four season climates) send out a siren call to become the most inviting, genuine expressions of our unique selves.

What are some of the everyday little rituals that add meaning to your life?  That make you feel excited to jump out of bed and start your day, or happy to slip between the covers of your winter duvet, read, catch Anthony Bourdain eating strange foods in amazing countries you might never see,…

Whatever you choose, remember, they don’t have to be monumental to be meaningful and memorable.

I feel my inner lebenkunstler smiling right now?  How about you? → Read more

August-September is a transitional time.

Languid days of summer quickly fade into the hustle and bustle of back-to-school prep in the air.

Some of us love to get wrapped up in the excitement of new adventures in learning.

This is a time when many of us have too many items on a to-do-list, particularly if we or someone we love are moving away from home for the first time to go to college.

Any situation that we find emotionally stressful, will likely stress our skin, resulting in unanticipated skin sensitivities, irritations and eruptions.

Even the good stuff, and we hope it’s all good stuff, can stress our skin when we have too many changes and too much excitement.

Earth Day is next week.  How do YOU celebrate Earth Day?

I don’t mean how should you celebrate it, because you can celebrate it anyway you want (no normative framework around this) but I’m interested, because there seem to be infinite ways to celebrate a day all about the planet on which we live, and conversely, without which, we couldn’t live, at least not yet, and certainly not in the same manner.

I saw part of the film “The Martian” while my daughter was watching it on Netflix, and I have to say, Mars is not for me.

The verdant landscapes, trees with abundant leaves, and flowers in bloom this spring hold the potential to transform our spirits. In the midwest, we know this all too well, especially these last few years, in light of, dare I say it, global warming.  I think I can dare.  It’s pretty clear that it’s arrived, and now we’re in the rush to figure out what to do to prevent more drastic consequences of our collective actions over generations.

In Minnesota, we deal daily with temperature and climate pendulum swings.  Is it spring, is it winter, is it spring, is it winter…? Mushy snow that melts nearly on contact with the pavement mid-April leaves us asking and waiting to change our closets and unveil our charming (let’s hope so) personalities to our neighbors.

We’re left with empirical knowledge and faith, knowing and believing that spring will come, as it always does.  We can leap from freezing winter temps, wind chills that threaten to push down my heavy Volvo trunk on top of my head while reaching for my purse inside (yeah, that’s right it did just that, and it was as frightening and painful as you might imagine when it happened at Costco), and a slippery mess of a rain-snow mix to 70 degrees the next day.

It can also feel a little like “En attendant Godot”, waiting for Godot or Mother Nature to brighten our yards and our spirits.  Come on Mother Nature, please hurry on over to Minnesota with your powerful feminine charms, we want to see our tulips and irises popping up!  I’d even be immensely grateful for a hosta or two along the boulder wall and by the mailbox.  I’ve been staring at colorful silk flowers in pots outside my front door all winter, because I can’t bear life without color.  Still, I don’t for a sec believe they’re real, and I’m sooooo….ready for flowers that grow in the earth! → Read more

written by Raulla S. Mitchell “All is a miracle. The stupendous order of nature, the revolution of a hundred million worlds around a million stars, the activity of light, the life of all animals, all are grand and perpetual miracles.”   Voltaire (1694-1778, France)

Bliss is a perpetual miracle. And what’s so fab about bliss is that we can find it everyday within ourselves!

We cannot help but be reminded of the veracity of Voltaire’s eloquent expression, particularly after months of nature covered in snow and ice, green begins to expose itself once again, the initial sign of nature’s powers of miraculous rejuvenation and rebirth.  Late March’s wet grass, blossoms beginning to form, fruit growing on trees, and moisture in the air tells us that spring has returned. We are part of the cycle of nature, and follow her revitalization.

Even if Mother Nature decides to snow huge flower-sized snowflakes this April in Minnesota, we know from experience that they’ll quickly melt when the sun comes out.  Hey, we’ve just been through this.  It could happen in April, just a few days away.

When I was a child, my grandmother used to call each April 1st with the same line “Look out the window, it’s snowing.”  I’d say “Grandma, it’s not snowing, don’t you know it’s April!”  She’d insist, so finally I’d put the phone down, go to the window, and when I’d return to the phone, she’s say the inevitable “April Fools.”  I miss her calls every April 1st.  I’ve always thought Mother Nature and my grandmother were just reminding me to be grateful for what’s to come?

What better place than a warm fragrant bath to discover your blissful rejuvenation this season? Your bath is a sanctuary for undisturbed reverie and meditation. Release all winter’s cares to be swept away by the uncontrolled beauty of your thoughts, feelings, emotions and sensations, and give in to wherever they lead you…Your bath is your bath.  It’s a rule-free zone.  Your isolation tank or a shared space, whatever you’re in the mood for.  → Read more
